Monday, April 27, 4:00 p.m., Oregon State University, Memorial Union, Room 208
"What Beavers, Ducks, Bart Simpson, and Leroy Vinnegar have in Common, or How to Make a State Encyclopedia of Oregon"
How does a group of Oregon scholars and writers go about creating an Oregon Encyclopedia of History & Culture? If they invoke the ambition of Denis Diderot, editor of the great 18th-century Encyclopedie, do they really intend to include everything and everyone Oregon? And what would that mean? Between the ambition and publication is an intellectual obstacle course, where the first question is: What's in and what's out? The story of this process is almost as interesting as the stuff that will be in The Oregon Encyclopedia.
William L. Lang is Professor of History at Portland State University and one of three Editors-in-Chief of the Oregon Encyclopedia of History & Culture. Born in Portland and educated at Willamette University, Washington State University, and University of Delaware, Lang is author of six books on Pacific Northwest History, most recently Two Centuries of Lewis and Clark (2004) and Great River of the West (2009).

Community Meetings
The Oregon Encyclopedia includes entries on all parts of the state, with special attention to smaller communities. In 2008, editors and staff visited many local communities to gather information for the Encyclopedia. The meetings encouraged open discussions of significant events, people, places, and institutions. By tapping into local sources of historical and cultural knowledge, the 2008 meetings and those planned over the coming months will give Oregonians the opportunity to contribute in significant ways to The Oregon Encyclopedia.
Through Community Meetings, The Oregon Encyclopedia will be a true reflection of who Oregonians are today.
